Kirtan (chanting of the Divine names in the Hindu tradition in India) is becoming ever more popular in the US and all over the world. People that are attracted to it come from different backgrounds and spiritual traditions. Many report experiencing calm, joy and healing.
Kirtan artists visit yoga studios, churches, theaters and even stadiums to lead chants. They are also invited to holistic expos, yoga conferences and other events.
New England is a place where kirtan has simply taken flight - a place rich with people practicing yoga and having a spiritual path. Many local artists lead kirtan across the region and artists such as Krishna Das, Deva Premal, Snatam Kaur and others come often and fill theaters with up to 1000 people.
More and more yoga studios are hosting a kirtan artist at least once a week. But what, you may ask, are the benefits for my studio or other place? Why should I make the effort to invite and host a kirtan artist?
First, you will definitely raise the positive vibrations in your studio and the surrounding community. Chanting the sacred mantras is done to produce some positive results in our lives and the lives of others.
Second, your studio will attract more students and fans if you host a kirtan on a regular basis. People will often bring their friends and family after experiencing the ecstasy and healing properties of chanting. The group of chanters grows slowly but consistently.
And third, Shunyam Productions (that is, Shunyam & Veena) has created several ways to help you promote the kirtan in your place. Their Meetup group "New England Kirtan" has over 700 members currently and the group has a calendar where all kirtans are posted and members learn about these events all in one place. We normally post about 40 to 50 kirtan gatherings every month. Another resource to promote your kirtan is Shunyam Productions' mailing list which reaches 10,000 New England yogis and kirtan lovers every Wednesday. The newsletter also features a clickable calendar for the week's kirtan events.
If you ever have any questions about the process of hosting a kirtan or choosing an artist, you can contact Veena at shunyamproductions@yahoo.com
Below we have included a list of local kirtan artists. We encourage you to visit their website, explore any audio or video samples of their music, and contact them directly to work out an agreement. Please click on their name to be directed to their website. JAI KRISHNA!
